Quotations

Stephen Hawking

"If we do discover a complete [unified] theory [of the universe], it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and ordinary people, be able to take part in the the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for then we should know the mind of God."
A brief History of Time [1988]. Conclusion

Exterior

The building sits within its surrounding landscape. The rounded forms blend with the rolling hills whereas the angular glass blends with the natural rock either side. The entrance is a tunnel through one of the smaller hills at the back of the building. The majority of the exterior is made of concrete and glass.

Above Ground

Ricky Swallow's studio and the gallery space are both located within the same large space.
.
Swallow's studio is nestled in the top corner supported by a wooden floor. The space is primarily made up of smooth spherical shapes and simple curves, this is intended to provide Swallow with a relaxing distraction free working environment. The shape of Swallow's space also corresponds to the flawless precision of his artworks, compared to the rough, natural shape of Nolan's space. Swallow also has a large window/skylight for natural light and a view point.
.
The Gallery space is the ground floor of the same large space. The walls are white concrete and the ground is a dark stone. Sculptures can be placed in the middle of the gallery floor or towards the walls in the centre of one of the spherical alcoves. Paintings are hung on stretched cables that run in pairs from the ceiling wherever necessary.

Below Ground

There are two studios located in the underground section of the model, both are for Sidney Nolan. The word attached to this lower area is mountains, and from each studio Nolan can look up one of the two mountains. The purpose of this is to create an environment that stimulates Nolan's memories since he painted this series of landscapes mostly in the studio from experiences in inland Australia.
.
The materials used are:
-natural rock in the centre and around the edge of the opening
-glass
-painted concrete for the angular walls
-two types of wood, one for each of the two bottom stair sections
-two types of rusted metal for the two upper section of the stairs
-natural logs for the hand rail

The Artists

Sidney Nolan

Between 1947 and 1950 Sidney Nolan spent spent months travelling through remote areas in Australia. This inspired a series of artworks including 'Inland Australia.' He painted the work quickly with the canvas lying flat on a table. The majority of the work was produced from memories of his experiences in inland Australia.

Ricky Swallow

Ricky Swallow produces very accurate wooden sculptures of a variety of common and not so common objects. 'Together is the New Alone' depicts a bird nestled in a shoe. Because of the high level of detail Swallow has in the work he would have required long hours in a comfortable environment to produce it. The work is quite small, 30 x 16 x 15 cm.
