Original Sketch

Currently the model is unfinished only depicting the bottom part of the section. The model consists of three large mountains of space submerged beneath the ground. The mountains cut into each other creating additional elements within the space such as the slope that leads from ground level into the central mountain space. The primary material used is concrete for the walls and floor. Glass is also used to create a sky light in one mountain space. In contrast to the sharp angles of the mountain forms there are vertical stone walls surrounding the opening and entrance.

STUDIO SESSION ONE

Inspiring building

Le Corbusier's well known chapel, Notre Dame du Haut has for a long time been one of my favorite and most inspiring examples of architecture. The iregular forms and simple textures combine to create a truly unique building that is fascinating to look at. Every element of the building apeals to me in some way, whether its the seemingly random placment of oddly shaped windows or the huge roof that appears to 'float' above the supporting walls. Although over 50 year old the chapel still stands out for me as a daring and inovative masterpiece of modern architecture.

Best piece of creative work

This is a clay sculpture I produced at school in year 9 as part of a an art project. Since its completion the sculpture has experienced multiple breakages and repairs. The numerous cracks and inconsistencies that have emerged have allowed the work to evolve, and develop character. Powdered graphite was used as the finish to give the hands their metalic look, however the graphite wasn't permanently fixed onto the clay, instead it was attached with a sticky resin that meant over time some of the finish has worn off, creating patches of bare clay. Similarly this has had the effect of allowing the sculpture to take on a life of its own, something I hadn't intially intended. I find the hands very interesting to examine each time I come across them, as they always apear to be slightly different.

This is a photo I took last year while I was taking my year off traveling around Europe. It depicts a canal in Bruges, Belgium, that I found especially beautiful to look at. One of the things I found appealing was the still water that lies directly infront of the houses, meeting their exterior walls. Because the water meets the buildings at such a point a perfect reflection of each building is created within the water.
